Just For Laughs, Odds and Ends
Students at California State University Stanislaus have discovered evidence that documents related to an upcoming speaking engagement by Sarah Palin were shredded and dumped after the university claimed that no public documents existed, a state senator said on Tuesday.
The students appeared at a Sacramento news conference with State Sen. Leland Yee, D-San Francisco this morning and said they found the documents on Friday in a dumpster outside the school’s administration building in Turlock. They include four pages of a contract for a “speaker” who will be traveling from Anchorage, though they do not identify the speaker by name.
The senator in March questioned how much the university is paying the former Alaska governor and vice presidential candidate for her speaking engagement on June 25. The university said a private university foundation contracted Palin for the $500-a-plate event and the contract included a privacy clause preventing officials from disclosing the speaker’s fee. April is the cruelest month. Or, if you live in Virginia, Confederate History Month.
The state is buzzing over Gov. Bob McDonnell’s proclamation urging citizens to spend the month recalling Virginia’s days as a member of the Confederate States of America. Although since McDonnell had previously turned April over to child abuse prevention, organ donation and financial literacy, perhaps it was O.K. to just pick your favorite.
The original Confederate History proclamation was a miracle of obfuscation. It did not even mention slavery. On Wednesday, the governor apologized for that and said that slavery “has left a stain on the soul of this state and nation.”
People, what’s our bottom line here. The governor of Virginia has decided to bring slavery into his overview of the history of the Confederacy. Good news, or is this setting the bar a wee bit too low?
Maybe we had better be grateful for small favors. It’s been a tough time lately for those of us who take social studies seriously.

Just after the RNC fired a low-level staffer for setting up a young donors event at Voyeur West Hollywood, it seems the GOP accidentally sent out a mailer asking for money with a phone number that directed loyal Republicans to… a phone sex hotline.
The mailer was supposed to look a bit like a Census form, with a series of questions for Republican voters, though they’re a bit more leading than the ones the government is asking: “Are you concerned that historic federal deficits and debt will seriously harm the future economic health of our country?” Which prompted one voter in Minnesota to try to call the phone number listed to complain about the resemblance to an official government document. Instead, that person got the phone sex lines. So the voter sent the mailing on to their member of Congress, who happened to be a Democrat, and turned it over to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. RNC spokesman Doug Heye says he doesn’t know how many copies went out with the wrong number.

That’s right! Whenever a Democrat has to resign, it’s front page news for at least a week. But, when a republican gets caught funneling money to his family’s business, the alleged “liberal” is silent. Had it not been for the release of the 138 page ethics report, we likely wouldn’t be hearing about it now, either.
From The New York Times:
Nathan Deal, a former Republican congressman who is running for Georgia governor, resigned from the House last week in a move that seemed certain to end an ethics investigation that could have proved politically embarrassing.
But on Monday, the Office of Congressional Ethics released its report anyway, concluding that Mr. Deal appeared to have improperly used his office to pressure Georgia officials to continue a vehicle inspection program that generated hundreds of thousands of dollars a year for his family’s auto salvage business.
The 138-page report details how Mr. Deal and his chief of staff intervened in 2008 and 2009 on behalf of the company, Recovery Services Inc., also known as Gainesville Salvage and Disposal. The report also said Mr. Deal had improperly failed to disclose that he was a corporate officer at the company, meaning that the $75,000 he earned from the business in 2008 violated a House limit on members’ outside income.
And this dude is running for Governor of Georgia! Continue reading this article here.
Government/Politics, State and Local

Since 2000, Florida has been synonymous with badly run and undemocratic elections. This distinction has not come to it by chance. Many of the state’s election officials and legislators work hard to keep eligible voters from casting ballots. The Florida Legislature is at it again, threatening to pass new rules that would make it harder for eligible voters, especially those from minorities and those who are poor, to register and vote.
Republican state legislators, who are behind the latest bills, want to make it illegal for anyone to get within 100 feet of a line of voters. That provision would criminalize election protection programs, in which nonpartisan volunteers make themselves available outside of polling places on Election Day to ensure that eligible voters know their legal rights and are able to cast ballots.
