A mine explosion killed at least 7 people and left more than 19 others unaccounted for in a small West Virginia town, triggering a massive rescue operation.
The blast was reported at around 3 p.m. at the Massey Energy Co.’s Upper Big Ranch mine near Whitesville, W. Va., about 30 miles south of Charleston W.V.
“All I can see is smoke where it caught the mountains on fire,” a women told ABC Radio from her home in Naoma about 3 miles from the mine.
The blast could be heard, and felt, for miles.
