Rush Limbaugh Calling For Riots In Denver

From ABC-7 (Denver)

DENVER — Talk show host Rush Limbaugh is sparking controversy again after he made comments calling for riots in Denver during the Democratic National Convention this summer.

He said the riots would ensure a Democrat is not elected as president, and his listeners have a responsibility to make sure it happens.

“Riots in Denver, the Democrat Convention would see to it that we don’t elect Democrats,” Limbaugh said during Wednesday’s radio broadcast. He then went on to say that’s the best thing that could happen to the country.

Will Rush Limbaugh Be Indicted for Voter Fraud?

From Alternet:

As the board of election in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, where Cleveland is located, launches an investigation into illegal crossover voting in the state’s 2008 presidential primary, a big open question remains unanswered: Will county officials go after the ringleaders of apparently illegal electioneering where thousands of Republican voters swore — under penalty of law — allegiance to the Democratic Party in order to vote for Hillary Clinton?

In case you missed it, Rush Limbaugh, the nation’s top-rated talk radio host, was urging Republicans in Texas and Ohio to skip their party’s primary on March 4 and instead cast a vote for Hillary Clinton in order to prolong the fight between her and Barack Obama. And that Tuesday, as media in both states reported, thousands of Republicans did just what Limbaugh and others had suggested — they changed parties to vote for Clinton.

“I want Hillary to stay in this, Laura,” Limbaugh told Laura Ingraham on Feb. 29, near the start of his Hillary crusade. “This is too good a soap opera. We need Barack Obama bloodied up politically, and it’s obvious that the Republicans are not going to do it and don’t have the stomach for it, as you probably know.”And on Wednesday, the day after the Ohio primary, Fox News asked Clinton if she owed Limbaugh a thank you. “Be careful what you wish for, Rush,” she replied. Later that day, Limbaugh played the Fox tape on his show and said, “How do you interpret this, folks? She could have said thank you. She could have said thank you! In fact, I was expecting in her victory speech last night to be thanked.”I helped give Mrs. Clinton the biggest and happiest moment and night of the campaign season so far, maybe her life, and she tells me, “Be careful what you wish for, Rush”? Why, that sounds like a threat, does it not? I’ve got a Democrat presidential candidate threatening your host. Why, I am stunned! After all I did …”

While this all makes for great talk radio and sounds like fun, there is one catch: What Limbaugh encouraged Republican voters to do in Ohio was a fifth-degree felony in that state, punishable with a $2,500 fine and six to 12 months in jail. That is because in order to change party affiliation in Ohio, voters have to fill out a form swearing allegiance to that party’s principles “under penalty of election falsification.”

On Thursday, March 20, the Cleveland Plain Dealerreported that the “Cuyahoga County Board of Election has launched an investigation that could lead to criminal charges against voters who maliciously switched parties for the March 4 presidential primary.” According to the report, “One voter scribbled the following addendum to his pledge as a new Democrat: “For one day only.”

“Such an admission amounts to voter fraud,” the report continued, attributing that conclusion to BOE member Sandy McNair, a Democrat. The report said the four-member board — two Democrats and two Republicans — had yet to vote on whether it would issue subpoenas, although Ohio’s secretary of state, Democrat Jennifer Brunner, is empowered to cast tie-breaking votes when the BOE is deadlocked.

U.S. bank woes are “poetic justice”: Buffett

By Wojtek Dabrowski

TORONTO (Reuters) - The woes in the U.S. financial sector are “poetic justice” for bankers who designed and sold complex investments that have since gone sour, billionaire investor Warren Buffett said on Wednesday.

The head of the Berkshire Hathaway Inc (BRKa.N: Quote, Profile, Research) (BRKb.N: Quote, Profile, Research) group of companies also played down worries about a credit crunch by saying that recent interest rate cuts mean low-cost funds are readily available.

But he warned that the U.S. dollar will continue to slide unless the country can rein in its yawning trade deficit — the “biggest factor” behind the decline. Still, he said, the U.S. economy will “do very well over time.”

Buffett, one of the world’s wealthiest people, appeared to see irony in the fact that many of the banks who marketed complex investments which have now crashed are bearing much of the fallout.

“It’s sort of a little poetic justice, in that the people that brewed this toxic Kool-Aid found themselves drinking a lot of it in the end,” he said.

Chess legend Fischer dies at 64

He was granted Icelandic citizenship in 2005 as a way to avoid being deported to the US.

Mr Fischer was wanted for breaking international sanctions by playing a match in the former Yugoslavia in 1992.

He also had alienated many in his homeland by broadcasting anti-Semitic diatribes and expressing support for the 11 September 2001 attacks in New York.

Suharto - As He Lays Dying

From ZNet:

By Andre Vltchek

It is 4 PM, 13th January 2008. The main entrance to Pertamina Hospital in South Jakarta is besieged by dozens of journalists. Almost all of them are local, as Indonesia doesn’t attract international media conglomerates, unless there is a deadly landslide, tsunami or airplane crash. Some reporters are placing the lenses of video and photo cameras against the glass of the hospital entrance, hoping to spot at least some action.

But there is hardly any detectable movement inside. General Suharto, the 86-year old former military dictator who ruled Indonesia for more than 3 decades, is lying somewhere deep inside this unattractive concrete structure, dying or more precisely in a “very critical condition” after almost all organ functions failed, as his doctor told a news conference on Sunday January 13. He was rushed to the hospital nine days earlier suffering from anemia and low blood pressure due to heart, lung and kidney problems.

There is no end to the flow of dignitaries offering support or early condolences to his family. On 13 January arrived the stone-faced and tight-lipped former Singaporean Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew, Suharto’s close friend, contemporary and fellow anti-Communist crusader. Mr. Lee who refused to answer questions of Indonesian journalists later loosened up to his countrymen, offering his sentiments to Channel News Asia and other Singaporean media: “I feel sad to see a very old friend with whom I had worked closely over the last 30 years, not really getting the honors that he deserves. Yes, there was corruption. Yes, he gave favors to his family and his friends. But there was real growth and real progress,” Lee was quoted as saying.

Nine years after Suharto stepped down, Indonesia remains one of the world’s most corrupt nations. According to Berlin-based Transparency International, it occupies 143-146 place out of 180 countries ranked, tied with Gambia, Russia and Togo (The 2007 Transparency International Corruption Perceptions Index).

According The United Nations and World Bank, there was much more than just average corruption and nepotism during and after Suharto’s reign: Suharto tops the list of embezzlers with an estimated 15-35 billion dollars, followed by former Philippines president Ferdinand Marcos, former president of Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo) Mobutu Sese Seko, and Sani Abacha of Nigeria. An impressive achievement considering that Suharto’s salary in 1999 - the year he was forced to resign after massive demonstrations that shook Jakarta - was only US$1764 a month. Critics say that Suharto and his family actually amassed more than 45 billion dollars, even more than concluded by both the United Nations and World Bank. The family is said to control about 36,000 km² of real estate in Indonesia, including 100,000 m² of prime office space in Jakarta and nearly 40 percent of the land in East Timor. More than US$73 billion is said to have passed through the family’s hands during Suharto’s 32-year rule.

But even to allude to such information can still be illegal in Indonesia. The UN and World Bank listing arrived just one week after Indonesia’s Supreme Court ordered Time Magazine to pay 106 million dollars in damages to the former dictator for defaming him in a 1999 article accusing Suharto and his relatives of amassing billions of dollars during his regime. Offers made by international organizations to the Indonesian government - to help to identify, freeze and repatriate money from accounts held by Suharto’s family abroad - were spurned and very rarely discussed by the media. -More>

Sir Edmund Hillary Dies at 88

From nzherald.Co.NZ:

6:43PM Friday January 11, 2008
By Martha McKenzie-Minifie  and Edward Gay

A state funeral is to be held for Sir Edmund Hillary, who died this morning from a heart attack, aged 88.

In a statement, his widow, Lady Hillary, indicated the family thought such a funeral appropriate, “recognising the impact [Sir Edmund] has on all New Zealanders”.

She added the family was comforted by messages of support from around the country and the world.

A date for the funeral would probably be fixed over the weekend as some family members were out of New Zealand and would take time to get home.

Among them is Sir Edmund’s only son Peter, currently in Portugal.

The funeral will be broadcast on TVNZ.

Lady Hillary said Sir Edmund died peacefully in Auckland Hospital at 9am today after his heart gave out.

He had been in hospital since Monday but was due out and had been looking forward to coming home.

“He remained in good spirits until the end.”

At the family’s Remuera home this afternoon, step-daughter Susan Hayman also said Sir Edmund was in “high spirits” prior to his death.

The family wanted some time to themselves to come to terms with his passing, she said.

A spokesman for acting Prime Minister Michael Cullen said Prime Minister Helen Clark had been in contact with the family as Sir Edmund’s health deteriorated. -More>

Bush Related to Vlad the Impaler

From Rawstory:

David Edwards and Muriel KanePublished: Tuesday October 30, 2007

Following the revelation that Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL), Vice President Dick Cheney and President George W. Bush are distant relations, the New York Post decided to report on some of Bush’s other relatives.

Most of Bush’s ancestors came to America in colonial times, and through them he — like tens of thousands of other Americans — is related to a large number of earlier presidents, as well as to both Dick Cheney and John Kerry.Bush also turns out to be related to Vlad the Impaler — the medieval tyrant who was one of the inspirations for the fictional Count Dracula. Some critics might say that Bush has certain things in common with Vlad, who is still honored by many Romanians for having saved their country from invasion by the Muslim Ottoman Turks. Vlad was a paranoid and bloodthirsty despot, however, who ruled through torture and murder.According to Crime Library, “During his tenure, he killed by the droves, impaling on a forest of spikes around his castle thousands of subjects who he saw as either traitors, would-be traitors or enemies to the security of Romania and the Roman Catholic Church. Sometimes, he slew merely to show other possible insurgents and criminals just what their fate would be if they became troublesome. A pamphlet published in Nuremburg, Germany, immediately following his death in 1476, tells of his burning beggars after allowing them free food at his court. ‘He felt they were eating the people’s food for nothing, and could not repay it,’ the broadside explains.” More>

Jenna Bush:”Its Not Even A Practical Question” To Ask Why I’m Not In Iraq

From The Huffington Post:

The following Q&A With Jenna Bush is from Time Magazine’s weekly 10 Questions feature where readers submit questions online.

Below is a question from Donald Pence, San Francisco about Jenna Bush service in Iraq.

If the war in Iraq is so noble, why aren’t you and your sister serving our country there?
Jenna Bush: I understand that point, but there are many ways to serve our country, and I think my skills are better suited for teaching and representing the U.S. in Latin America through unicef. I respect the men and women of our country who are over there fighting. It is an unbelievably selfless thing to do. But if people really thought about it, they would know it’s not even a practical question.-Link to Time Magazine Artcle
