JOHN HOWARD’S promotion of a new global climate-change pact that would
protect Australia’s economic interests is unrealistic and likely to
fail, the former US vice-president Al Gore says.

In Australia this month to train “climate change presenters”, Mr Gore
yesterday urged the Prime Minister to join negotiations taking place in
Nairobi on a tougher second phase of the Kyoto Protocol on climate change.

“If [Australia’s proposal] is not part of the rest of the world
community then it has no meaningful force,” Mr Gore said. More….

Australia only a Kyoto talks ‘observer’
By Valkerie Mangnall in Nairobi, Kenya
November 14, 2006
AUSTRALIA has been put in its place by the head of the UN Climate Change
Conference who has pointedly referred to Canberra’s “observer” status
because it won’t sign the Kyoto Protocol.

Just so the Yanks won’t get too uppity:

RUPERT MURDOCH’S reaction to a poll revealing Australia’s negative
feelings about the United States was the spark that led to last night’s
A-list benefit dinner hosted by the American Australian Association.

Mr Murdoch, chairman and chief executive of News Corporation, who was
honoured at the dinner as “a quintessential American Australian“, was
horrified at last year’s Lowy Institute poll that showed only Indonesia,
the Middle East, Iran and Iraq generated fewer positive feelings than
the United States. To contact Jon Fox email: jon[at]headonradionetwork[dot]com. You might also catch Jon in the Chatroom.

The First Bad Step.

WASHINGTON - The Michigan Democrat who will head the House Energy and
Commerce Committee next year previewed his energy priorities: cleaner
cars powered by diesel and electricity, storing waste from U.S. nuclear
reactors and probing offshore federal lease deals.

Rep. John Dingell, who has been a U.S. lawmaker since 1955, also gave a
strong indication of what he did not plan to do: raise fuel-efficiency
standards for U.S. automobiles.

10 Points of Environmental Action.

Drastic Action on Climate Change is Needed Now - and Here’s the Plan The government must go further, and much faster, in its response to the moral question of the 21st century
by George Monbiot

It is a testament to the power of money that Nicholas Stern’s report should have swung the argument for drastic action, even before anyone has finished reading it. He appears to have demonstrated what many of us suspected: that it would cost much less to prevent runaway climate change than to seek to live with it. Useful as this finding is, I hope it doesn’t mean that the debate will now concentrate on money. The principal costs of climate change will be measured in lives, not pounds. As Stern reminded us yesterday, there would be a moral imperative to seek to prevent mass death even if the economic case did not stack up.
