TEHRAN — This has become the city of whispers. Many of the people I spoke to when I arrived last week are in prison. Stabbings and shootings punctuate the night. Fear rushes down alleys and dead ends. Still the whispering continues.

The feeling in the crowd seems to be: today or never, all together and heave!

A man holds his mobile phone up to me: footage of a man with his head blown off last Monday. A man, 28, whispers: “The government will use more violence, but some of us have to make the sacrifice.”

Another whisper: “Where are you from?” When I say the United States, he says: “Please give our regards to freedom.”</SNIP>

If you read nothing else today, read this article! It reduced me to tears.

These are not my countrymen and women, but they are in the sense that they, like many of us,  yearn for freedom. I am so proud to be part of a race of beings that can produce people like this. I am also so ashamed that under the same circumstances in 2000, the American people did not take to the streets like the people of Iran. They sat on their asses and watched some more television! What a sorry comment on the American people.
